On May 13th, surgeon Gao Jian successfully performed a thoracoscopic radical lung cancer surgery assisted by Apple Vision Pro at Peking University People's Hospital, guided by Academician Wang Jun, Director Li Yun, and Professor Zhou Zuli from the Department of Thoracic Surgery. This case marked the first domestic use of this equipment in the field of thoracoscopic surgery.
Apple Vision Pro is a mixed-reality headset. In this thoracoscopic surgery, it played a crucial role in assisting surgeons in identifying and measuring the three-dimensional spatial distances between the site of the lesion and the surrounding organs, blood vessels and other important tissues, thereby enabling accurate surgical risk assessment and increasing surgical safety.
Additionally, the advanced headset supported the recording of the entire surgery from the chief surgeon’s first-person perspective. This feature aids in postoperative review and remote teaching by facilitating the storage, retrieval, and sharing of key information. Even in complex intraoperative situations that require external advice, the surgeon can connect with an expert remotely for real-time advice, thereby improving medical safety and helping young surgeons enhance their skills.
In recent years, the application of AI in clinical treatment has been gradually driving medical model innovation. Apple Vision Pro is a compelling example and is considered a step toward promoting innovative transformations in minimally invasive surgery. AI technology has the potential to optimize surgical steps by analyzing data from the entire surgical process. This will significantly improve surgical efficiency and safety, offering stronger support to doctors and better treatment outcomes for patients.
