The newly completed Day Surgery Center at the Xizhimen Campus of Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH) was inaugurated on the afternoon of January 18, 2024. The opening ceremony was attended by President Wang Jun, Vice President Hong Nan, Administration Office Director Shao Xiaofeng, and Day Surgery Center Director Xu Junjun, along with representatives from various clinic departments.

Day surgery is a novel, efficient, and safe surgical management model suitable for patients undergoing small-and medium-sized surgeries. After preoperative examinations and anesthesia assessments before admission, the patient will have the surgery performed on the same day and be generally discharged a few hours lateron the following day if his/her postoperative condition is stable enough. Equipped with an independent day ward team consisting of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and specialized nursing staff, the Day Surgery Center provides patients from various departments with efficient and convenient treatment after rigorous surgeries and management, thus saving more time and unnecessary examination steps among different departments in the hospital. The "one-stop" medical service of day surgery has gained favor among many medical institutions and patients.
It should be noted that while such surgical management shortens a hospital stay, it does not forcibly shorten the hospitalization time. PKUPH has established a comprehensive and detailed day surgery management model covering the whole peri-operation period. Patients must undergo required assessments and be allowed to be discharged only after having no postoperative surgicalanesthesia complications risk.
Located in the crowded central area of Beijing, the Xizhimen Campus of PKUPH has limited space where day surgery had to be conducted in the central operating room previously, causing inconvenience for both the sick and medical staff. To provide excellent patient-friendly service, the hospital successfully created a dedicated area for the Day Surgery Center within its already cramped space in just 141 days after overcoming multiple challenges. The founding of the Day Surgery Center is expected to further enhance the quality of medical services, improve the effectiveness of operations, and elevate the overall healthcare experience for the public.
