Visits | Delegation from the University of Chicago Medicine Explores Collaborative Opportunities with Peking University People’s Hospital

A distinguished delegation from the University of Chicago Medicine, including Professor J. Michael Millis, James Bae (Director of International Programs), and Ge Zening (Executive Director of UChicago’s Center in Beijing) visited Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH) on September 13. The delegation engaged in fruitful discussions with Gao Jie(Director of Hepatobiliary Surgery), Li Zhao (Deputy Director of Hepatobiliary Surgery), and Wang Qiuyi (Deputy Director of International Affairs Office) from PKUPH.
Established in 1927, the University of Chicago Medicine is a large non-profit academic health system with multiple affiliated hospitals and outpatient clinics. It provides world-renowned patientcare and is the largest provider of medical care on the South Side of Chicago.
Hepatobiliary Surgery Department of PKUPH,
a pioneer in the treatment of portal hypertension and liver cancer in China,
has maintained a leading position in the fields of liver, bile duct, pancreas,
spleen, and other related diseases. Since 2000, the department has been
performing liver transplant surgeries, accumulating over 600 cases to date,
with a remarkable postoperative one-year mortality of less than 10%. In 2013,
the department completed Beijings first heart-death donor liver transplant.
The visiting delegation gained preliminary
insightsthe strengths of PKUPH, including the hospital’s academic
disciplines, expert teams, and current medical landscape. Director Ge expressed
a keen interest in establishing collaborative exchanges with the hospital.
Subsequently, Director James Bae presented the international consulting
services and existing global cooperation projects at the University of Chicago
Medicine. Professor Millis elucidated the rich history of collaboration between
the University of Chicago Medicine and major Chinese hospitals, emphasizing the
profound friendship.
The delegation expressed their hope for future interdisciplinary collaboration with PKUPH, aiming to enhance exchanges and learning opportunities for medical professionals and students. The two institutions are expected to advance joint research projects and foster deeper cooperation in various medical fields.
