Obstetrics & Gynecology
Overview
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Peking University People's Hospital (PKUPH) was established by the renowned Chinese expert, Professor Qiaozhi Lin, in April 1942. Over the decades, it has consistently committed itself to providing high-quality medical care, setting standards in education, and conducting innovative research. Today, it has evolveda modern academic and clinical medical center recognized for advancing the science and quality of women's healthcare.
It is a nationally leading academic center and a master's and doctoral degree-granting institution. Its clinical and teaching programs have been recognized as the National Key Specialties, Key Disciplines of the Ministry of Education, Key Clinical Specialists of the National Health Commission, and Priority Specialty Disciplines under the Project 211(a higher education development and sponsorship scheme). Its clinical and academic strengths include the treatment of malignant gynecological tumors, minimally invasive surgery, pelvic floor disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of high-risk pregnancies and infertility.
The OB/GYN Department has a bed capacity of 186 and a strong team comprising 25 chief physicians, 24 deputy chief physicians, 12 attending doctors, and 15 residents. It provides clinical services to over 330,000 outpatients and 13,000 inpatients annually.
The department includes:
1) Clinical Section: Gynecology, Obstetrics, Family Planning, and Reproductive Medicine;
2) Basic Research Section: OB/GYN Research Laboratory and Gynecologic Oncology Laboratory;
3) Journal Editorial Office: Chinese Journal of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Gynecology
After over seven decades of development, the Department of Gynecology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic oncology, pelvic floor disorders, and minimally invasive surgery. It serves more than 150,000 outpatients, and 6,000 inpatients, and performs 4,000 operations each year. Two new subsections—the Gynecologic Oncology Center and the Pelvic Disease Treatment Center—have rapidly developed and now hold leading positions in China.
Gynecologic Oncology:
The department specializes in the early diagnosis and individualized treatment of ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers. Through comprehensive treatments including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, patient survival rates and quality of life have significantly improved. The department has received a National Science and Technology Achievement Award, 5 national invention patents, and 6 ministry-level science and technology awards.
Minimally Invasive Surgery:
As a first-class endoscopic center in China, the department is capable of performing all types of gynecologic laparoscopic surgeries. Over the past decade, significant advances have been made in laparoscopic techniques for malignant tumors. In 2010, it was designated a Stage IV Endoscopic National Training Center. A series of national continuing education programs are regularly held, promoting the development of endoscopic techniques throughout China.
Pelvic Floor Disorders:
As one of the earliest treatment centers for female pelvic floor disorders, the department has made notable progress in clinical management and pioneered various surgical techniques. It has developed a multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) team model for comprehensive treatment, received a ministry-level science and technology award, and established a leading position in China. The department has organized urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery conferences for 12 consecutive years, training more than 5,000 doctors from 26 provinces.
Obstetrics
The Department of Obstetrics has a bed capacity of 50 and serves over 100,000 outpatients and manages more than 3,000 deliveries annually. As one of Beijing's first prenatal diagnosis and emergency rescue centers, it has accumulated extensive experience in the management of high-risk pregnancies, pregnancy complications, and complex obstetric emergencies. In September 1994, it passed the WHO assessment and became one of the first eight "baby-friendly hospitals" in Beijing.
The department features comprehensive prenatal care and high-risk pregnancy management systems. It is particularly distinguished in the management of pregnancies complicated by hematological diseases and autoimmune conditions. Fetal congenital heart disease screening via ultrasound is another strong area.
Gestational health education and postpartum guidance have been offered for over two decades, with engaging content and diverse formats attracting large numbers of pregnant women and their families. More than 4,000 individuals participate in the Pregnant Women School each year. National CEE programs hosted by the department include "New Progress in Maternal-Fetal Medicine" and "Skills of Midwifery and Nursing Training."
Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine
The Department of Family Planning and Reproductive Medicine provides specialized services in family planning and a full range of infertility treatments. In 1996, it formally established an infertility clinic and launched the second reproductive medicine center in Beijing. The department comprises the Reproductive Medicine Center, the Family Planning Clinic, and a 16-bed ward, offering high-quality services not only to Beijing residents but also to patients from across China and overseas.
Key areas of expertise include infertility caused by fallopian tube blockage, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, low ovarian reserve, severe male factor infertility, and unexplained infertility. As one of the first reproductive centers authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Health to provide assisted reproductive technology (ART) services, the center performs over 2,000 IVF/ICSI cycles and 500 IUI cycles annually, with success rates ranking among the top both nationally and internationally.
In addition to clinical consultation, the department also offers non-invasive interventions and minimally invasive reproductive surgeries, such as laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures for intrauterine abnormalities, fallopian tube disease, endometriosis, and other gynecologic conditions aimed at preserving and restoring fertility. As a pioneer in reproductive surgery in China, the team successfully organized the 1st National Conference for Reproductive Surgery and Fallopian Tubes in 2015. Featured specialties include female infertility, male sterility, recurrent miscarriage, and fertility-preserving gynecological treatments.
Medical Research
Thanks to the efforts of its researchers, the OB/GYN Department has secured 224 research grants, totaling 60.6 million CNY, from the National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), the National Science and Technology Support Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation.
