Tracing the Footsteps of Dr. Wu Lien-Teh: Descendants of Dr. Wu Reconnect with Their Roots at Peking University People’s Hospital

On September 5, 2026, the “Tracing the Legacy of Wu Lien-Teh” delegation, which included descendants of Dr. Wu Lien-Teh, members of the Wu Lien-Teh Research Center, and other domestic representatives, visited Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH), embarking on a journey to reconnect with their family and institutional roots.

The delegation visited the former site of Beijing Central Hospital, now the hospital’s Baitasi Campus. Founded by Dr. Wu Lien-Teh and opened in 1918, the hospital was the predecessor of today's PKUPH. By revisiting this significant landmark in their family history, his descendants learned about the development of modern medicine in China and viewed plans for the future China Museum of Modern Medicine at the site.
At the Xizhimen Campus, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh’s descendants and hospital representatives laid a flower basket at his statue, paying tribute to his enduring contributions to medicine and public health.
During the forum, the descendants shared genuine family memories and reflections on Dr. Wu Lien-Teh’s life and legacy. Their stories left a deep impression on those present, showing how Dr. Wu’s spirit and dedication continue to inspire future generations. The ideals he held more than a century ago still resonate today, carrying his legacy forward.
The Wu Lien-Teh Research Center further supported the development of the China Museum of Modern Medicine by donating historical materials and photographs to PKUPH during the forum. These materials provide valuable insightDr. Wu Lien-Teh’s vision and the early history of Beijing Central Hospital.

A highlight of the visit was the appointment ceremony for Dr. Liu Shan Woo, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh’s great-granddaughter, as a Visiting Professor of Peking University People’s Hospital. The appointment represents a further deepening of the longstanding connection between the Wu family and the hospital. In her new role, Dr. Liu will contribute her expertise to the hospital’s development in Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center, while also supporting the development of the museum.
For the Wu family, this visit was more than a journey to trace their roots. It was a reunion across generations and a meaningful connection between family heritage and the century-long history of PKUPH. As the hospital continues to carry forward Dr. Wu Lien-Teh’s legacy, his dedication, courage, and spirit in medical professional will continue to inspire future generations.
