Gynecology | Global Alliance for Tumor-Fertility Preservation Established under the Leadership of PKUPH Professor Wang Jianliu
2026-05-20
The Alliance of Tumor-Fertility Preservation (ATFP), led by Professor Wang Jianliu of Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH), was officially launched during the 38th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy (ISGE) held in Algiers, Algeria, on May 14, 2026.
As the first official ISGE-affiliated alliance, ATFP brings together experts in gynecologic oncology, reproductive medicine, minimally invasive surgery, endocrinology, and related fields from over 30 countries and regions. The alliance aims to strengthen global collaboration to preserve the reproductive and endocrine functions of young patients receiving cancer treatment.
As cancer survival rates are improving worldwide, fertility loss has become an increasingly important concern for younger patients. “The advances in cancer treatment should not come at the cost of losing the ability to give birth and have children,” said Professor Wang, the founding chair of ATFP.
The establishment of ATFP is based on years of clinical and research work by the PKUPH team in oncofertility. Professor Wang and his team proposed the “4R” concept for fertility-preserving treatment in endometrial cancer: Reverse the tumor, Reserve the organs, Reconstruct the function, and Reproduction. They also developed a new treatment strategy that focuses on the control of blood pressure, glycemia and blood lipids. It has achieved overall response rates of over 90% in selected patients with endometrial cancer.
These approaches have since expanded beyond gynecologic cancers to breast cancer, hematologic malignancies, and bone tumors. The team has performed ovarian tissue cryopreservation in a 20-month-old child and conducted a longitudinal follow-up study on fertility after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. These efforts have further extended fertility preservation options for different individuals.
According to ATFP leadership, the alliance will focus on three priorities: establishing a global multicenter database, developing international clinical guidelines, and promoting multicenter clinical research. This initiative reflects the growing international collaboration in oncofertility and the expanding global role of Chinese clinical research teams in this emerging field.
