On the afternoon of July 9, 2024, Associate Vice President Medhat Z. Askar of Qatar University (QU) visited Peking University People's Hospital (PKUPH), accompanied by Deputy Chief Liu Yuan of the Division Office for International Exchange in the Office of International Cooperation of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC). The meeting was attended by Academician and Chair Huang Xiaojun of the Peking University Institute of Hematology at PKUPH, Vice President Wang Tianbing of PKUPH, Vice Chair Li Zhao of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery at PKUPH, Deputy Director Wang Qiuyi of the Office of International Affairs and External Cooperation at PKUPH and other staff.

First, Vice President Wang Tianbing extended a warm welcome and briefly introduced the hospital to Professor Medhat Z. Askar. He noted that QU Health Sector has been dedicated to creating a community of future doctors who are patient-focused and skilled in caring for people with respect and compassion. This philosophy aligns with the values of PKUPH. Vice President Wang Tianbing hoped that this visit would lay the groundwork for future collaboration.

Professor Medhat Z. Askar thanked the hospital for its warm reception. He recalled the visit earlier this year by Academician Qiao Jie, Executive Vice President of Peking University and President of PKUHSC, to QU, where both institutions had engaged in detailed discussions on joint research programs and faculty and student exchange programs. He stated that he had long been aware of the advanced education and extraordinary academic strength at PKUHSC and PKUPH. His main objective for this visit was to explore the cooperation potential in health education between the QU Health Sector and PKUPH.

Vice Chair Li Zhao of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery then gave a comprehensive overview of the department's development and international collaborations. He demonstrated a keen interest in exploring cooperative opportunities with QU. Professor Medhat Z. Askar also introduced QU Health Sector, highlighting its research fields, disciplines, academic achievements and international partnerships. He emphasized that despite being relatively "young", the Health Sector has a comprehensive and well-established academic system and has achieved remarkable research output in recent years.

Professor Medhat Z. Askar expressed a strong desire to collaborate on education with PKUPH. He mentioned that his university has established student exchange programs with several prestigious universities worldwide and welcomes foreign students to study there. He hoped that this meeting would pave the way for providing international exchange and learning opportunities for medical students and faculty from both institutions. Vice President Wang Tianbing echoed the enthusiasm for potential future collaborations.

Accompanied by representatives of the department, Professor Medhat Z. Askar visited the Peking University Institute of Hematology, where Academician Huang Xiaojun attended and shared in-depth views on various topics of mutual interest.

As a teaching hospital affiliated with PKUHSC, Peking University People's Hospital has upheld the cultivation philosophy that effective medical education should integrate theory with practice and combine medical skills with ethics. Our hospital will continue to strongly support the initiatives of the Peking University Health Science Center and its international cooperation.
