On September 12, in a humanitarian effort, the International Sight
Saving Mission medical team from Peking University People's
Hospital (PKUPH) was dispatched to Kyrgyzstan by the National Health Commission
of the People's Republic of China to deliver essential healthcare services to
the local population, with the aim to bring light to six hundred Kyrgyz
citizens.
(PKUPH, known for its extensive participation
in health missions, completed the Sight Saving Mission in 2019 and 2023 in Uzbekistan where its
medical team performed free cataract surgeries for one thousand local patients
and established the Sino-Uzbek Center for Blindness Prevention.)
On September 13, the medical team started cataract surgeries for free in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan's capital. Wherever the medical team went, it was warmly welcomed by local patients, many of whom waited early outside the offices of Chinese experts.
In addition to providing free quality medical service, eye specialists from PKUPH also held medical exchange symposiums on ophthalmology there to share expertise with local medical workers, thus enhancing the local medical strength.
As of September 25, the last day of this
medical assistance, the medical team from PKUPH has screened 376 people and
completed 330 cataract surgeries at the National Hospital of Kyrgyzstan,
successfully completing the assistance aim.
Domestic and foreign
media have paid high attention to this cross-border medical assistance since
its inception. One of the stories occurring on this journey of healing will be staged
at the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in October this
year.
