Vascular Surgery | Minimally Invasive Treatment for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm at Peking University People's Hospital
2023-05-29
In April 2023, Mr. Li ,diagnosed as ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, came to Peking University People’s Hospital. Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm is one of the most critical emergencies in vascular surgery, with a mortality rate over 90%.
Dr. He Changshun performed additional CT scans immediately to confirm the diagnosis and discover the risk of secondary rupture. Besides, due to Mr. Li’s Rh-negative blood type, emergency open surgery was not viable. The only available option was Minimally Invasive Endovascular Aneurysm Repair. This procedure requires exceptional precision from surgeons. Surgeons have to anchor the stent precisely with a short of healthy arterial wall near the aneurysm’s proximal end to ensure renal artery blood flow and maintain optimal adherence between the stent and the artery wall, since any leakage could result in continued bleeding from the aneurysm.
The operation was successfully completed within 50 minutes. Intraoperative bleeding in the operation was less than 50ml. Intraoperative angiography revealed precise positioning of the stent with isolation of the abdominal aortic aneurysm cavity and no signs of leakage. A follow-up CT scan conducted one month later showed bleeding from the abdominal aortic aneurysm has been basically absorbed.
The Department of Vascular Surgery of Peking University People's Hospital has carried out minimally invasive treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm for nearly 20 years. The number of surgeries and the difficulty of cases rank among the top in China.
