Ophthalmology | The "International Sight Saving Mission" Medical Team from Peking University People's Hospital Successfully Completed their Overseas Mission

2023-05-09

The medical team from Peking University People’s Hospital embarked on a journey to bring “light” to cataract patients in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on April 10, 2023. During their 18-day mission in Bukhara and Samarkand, they performed a total of 530 cataract surgeries, surpassing their initial target of 500 surgeries. Through close collaboration between Chinese and Uzbek personnel, the China-Uzbekistan Collaborating Center for the Prevention of Blindness opened in Tashkent on April 19. This center serves as the first overseas collaborative center established by Lifeline Express, facilitating communication and cooperation on ophthalmology and providing high-level ophthalmological services to more patients. The medical team also shared cutting-edge techniques and knowledge with local medical personnel, training them to independently perform cataract surgeries. Furthermore, they successfully completed preliminary investigations for the Sight Saving Mission in Kyrgyzstan.

This “International Sight Saving Mission” is the first step towards fulfilling President Xi Jinping’s commitment made at the 22nd Meeting of Heads of State Council of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States in September 2022. The commitment aims to provide free surgeries for 2,000 cataract patients in SCO member countries over the next three years. The mission exemplifies Xi Jinping’s diplomatic philosophy of fostering friendship through sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness. It also marks the initiation of medical cooperation between China and Central Asian nations and contributes to the development of China-Central Asia Health Silk Road. The mission showcases professionalism and humanism of Chinese government and medical workers. The “International Sight Saving Mission” medical team from Peking University People’s Hospital will continue to make significant contributions along the Health Silk Road.
