Obstetrics and Gynecology | PKUPH Successfully Performed Its First Case of Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation in Child with Leukemia

Recently, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Peking University People's Hospital, together with the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Hematology, successfully implemented ovarian tissue cryopreservation, the best fertility preservation plan for an 11-year-old girl suffering from leukemia, to save the "seeds" of hope for her.
In recent years, the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has saved the lives of more and more patients.
However, high-dose chemotherapy before transplantation is a double-edged sword, generating great damage to ovarian function while allowing patients to achieve long-term survival.
Professor Wang Jianliu, Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking University People's Hospital and a leading specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, organized joint consultations and evaluations with experts in gynecological oncology, reproductive medicine, hematology, pediatrics and other departments of the hospital. They decided to adopt a minimally invasive surgery for rapid recovery.
Cryopreservation of ovarian tissue before high-dose chemotherapy provides the best possible solution for the girl to restore ovarian endocrine function and ovulation after bone marrow transplantation.
After the operation, Professor Wang Jianliu said: "I hope patients have a better choice and way out when they have to choose between their own health and loss of fertility. This will help them recover their endocrine function, so when they get married in the future, they will have children, and a happy family. This is the purpose and meaning of our striving."
