Hematology | Peking University Institute of Hematology Has Performed a Record of 10,000 Cases of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

As of January 20, 2021, the team of Peking University Institute of Hematology /the Department of Hematology of Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH) has performed 10,000 cases of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) , becoming the only bone marrow transplant center in Asia that has reached a milestone in the growth of HSCT cases.
On January 27, 1964, Prof. LU Daopei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, successfully performed the first syngeneic bone marrow transplantation in Asia, which was the fourth successful bone marrow transplantation in the world, marking the beginning of bone marrow transplantation at Peking University Institute of Hematology /the Department of Hematology of PKUPH.
From zero to one, and from one to ten thousand, Peking University Institute of Hematology/the Department of Hematology of PKUPH has witnessed rapid development during the past half century. In 2016, Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) officially stated that the approach for haplo-identical stem cell transplantation (haplo-SCT) created by Prof. HUANG Xiaojuns research team of Peking University Institute of Hematology/the Department of Hematology of PKUPH is called "Beijing Protocol”. It was since then, the “Beijing Protocol” has been recognized by the international counterparts as one of the successful approaches for haplo-SCT. Today, the Department of Hematology of PKUPH has become the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Disease and the largest allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation center in the world. And the key technology of the "Beijing Protocol" has been extended to more than 100 transplant centers in China and more than 10 overseas transplant centers in Italy, Israel, France and South Korea.
On the afternoon of January 20, 2021, Peking University Institute of Hematology /the Department of Hematology of PKUPH held the online commemorative event to witness this historic moment. Ms. GUO Yanhong, Vice Director of the Bureau of Medical Administrationof the Chinese National Health Commission, Academician Zhan Qimin, Executive Vice President of Peking University and President of Peking University Health Science Center, Prof. Jiang Baoguo, President of Peking University People’s Hospital, Prof. Wang Debing, Former Party Secretary of Peking University and Former Deputy Director of Peking University Institute of Hematology, Academician Lu Daopei, Founding Director of Peking University Institute of Hematology, and Prof. Huang Xiaojun, Director of Peking University Institute of Hematology attended the event and addressed the audience online.
