Recently, Cell launched a collection of “Best of Cell 2020” to showcase some of the most exciting cell biology research over the previous year. Among the 16 articles included, two were written by Chinese scholars.
Among them, the research group of Prof. Shen Zhanlong, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Peking University People's Hospital, and the research group of Prof. Zhang Zemin, Biomedical Pioneering Innovation Center of Peking University (PKU), School of Life Sciences of PKU, and Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics of PKU, as well as the research team of Jackson G. Egen and Yu Xin, Amgen Inc., jointly published an article entitled “Single-Cell Analyses Inform Mechanisms of Myeloid-Targeted Therapies in Colon Cancer” in Cell in April 2020, which was included in the collection of “Best of Cell 2020”.
As the result of a series of researches on the immune microenvironment of colorectal cancer, this study systematically characterized the tumor microenvironment of colorectal cancer patients at the single-cell level, especially the infiltrating myeloid cell group, and analyzed the group characteristics, lineage development of TAM and DC cells (tumor-associated macrophages) and their interaction with T cells and other cells. The authors also proposed a new classification of tumor-associated macrophages and revealed immunotherapy mechanisms for colorectal cancer targeting myeloid cells.
Shen Zhanlong, M.D., is a professor of the Department of Gastroenterology and Deputy Director of the Laboratory of Surgical Oncology at Peking University People’s Hospital. He received training as a post-doctor in the University of Helsinki in Finland in 2010. He was a visiting scholar in The Catholic University of Korea’s Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Florida Hospital in the United States and St. Mark’s Hospital in the United Kingdom. In 2019, Prof. Shen was named a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He once served as Vice Secretary General of the Chinese Society of Multidisciplinary Team, Co-leads of Asian-Pacific Gastrointestinal Surgery (APGIS), Vice Chair of the Chinese Society of Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (taTME), and member of the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons (ASCRS).
In clinical practice, he focuses on the clinical trial and development of new technique of GI surgery. In basic research, he focuses on the mechanism of invasion and metastasis of gastrointestinal cancer, such as epigenetics, tumor microenvironment and proteomics. He has published 86 papers as the first authorcorresponding author, and 46 papers in international SCI journals, such as Nature, Cell, PNAS, EMBO Reports, etc. He once won the Outstanding Research Innovation Award of Peking University Health science Center, "Best of Cell 2020", etc.
