PKUPH was considered a model hospital in China and has attracted worldwide attention since its opening in 1918. Dr. Wu Lien-teh, the founding director of PKUPH, was the first medical student of Chinese descent to study at the University of Cambridge, and a candidate for the 1935 Nobel Prize in Medicine. He was also a founder of the Chinese Medical Association and served as the first president of the Association from 1916 to 1920.
“This was the institution to which I devoted my best efforts unceasingly for four years, because it was intended as a model civil hospital of China.”
