Peking University Arthritis Institute

Peking University Arthritis Institute was founded in 1990. It is the first institution in China to carry out the diagnosis, treatment, and research of joint diseases, and the first clinical center that performed artificial joint arthroplasty and minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery in the country.

We offer high-quality care and services to patients with various musculoskeletal problems around joints. Every year, our clinical staff takes care of a high volume of patients. Our surgeons treat the following conditions, such as arthritis and sports injuries, and manage complex cases, such as hip and knee joint replacements. The Arthroplasty Service specializes in innovative reconstructive surgery for patients with arthritic hips and knees and other joint disorders. We also act as a referral resource center for disorders considered unusual. The Sports Medicine Service specializes in ACL/PCL reconstruction, meniscus repair, and shoulder, hip, and ankle arthroscopy. Annually, we perform approximately 2,000 arthroplasty and 1,000 arthroscopic surgeries.

Recently, we have intensified our efforts in the prevention, treatment, and research of early-stage arthropathy. Based on the different stages and severity of patients' conditions, we have provided individualized treatment services, including exercise rehabilitation, conventional conservative therapy, and surgical intervention.

Through our efforts and contributions towards progress in joint diseases, our institution has successively been certified as the National Key Discipline and has won the Ministry of Education Progress Award as well as the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Award. Dr. Lin Jianhao, the Director of Peking University Arthritis Clinic and Research Center, has been recognized as the leading expert in the management and research of ten major diseases by the Beijing Science Committee (the spine and joint disease field).

Meanwhile, we have dedicated our efforts to continuing medical education (CME) on diagnosis and treatment technology for joint disease. Since 1990, we have conducted CME courses on artificial joint arthroplasty annually, and thousands of surgeons in our field have studied and communicated in our department.
