Urology
Department of Urology
In the 1940s, our urology service was first directed by Dr. Xie Yuanfu, the founder of urology in China. Other well-known experts in urology at the time included Dr. Wu Jieping (a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Professor Meng Guangdong. In 1978, the Department of Urology was established as an independent division. Dr. Meng Guangdong, Dr. Hou Shukun, Dr. Zhu Jichuan, and Dr. Wang Xiaofeng served as the directors of the department in succession. At present, there are 5 doctoral supervisors, 3 master’s supervisors, over 80 hospital beds, and more than 50 physicians and staff members in our department. The department receives over 55,000 outpatient visits and performs over 2,300 surgeries annually.
The department has made significant contributions to the treatment of urinary calculi. In 1984, Dr. Meng Guangdong, Dr. He Shenxu, Dr. Wang Xiaofeng, and Dr. Xu Tao collaborated with the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to develop China’s first extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter, which won the first prize of the National Award for Science and Technology Progress. Our treatment of urinary calculi is among the top in the world, especially for complicated urinary calculi.
Andrology is another strong point of our department. Two of our former directors, Dr. He Shenyu and Dr. Wang Xiaofeng, served as the presidents of the Andrological Association of China.
Our surgical experts have pioneered minimally invasive techniques to provide patients with smaller scars and less downtime following treatment for diseases such as prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer, as well as stone retraction. They perform a high volume of minimally invasive surgeries each year, including radical prostatectomy, partial and radical nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, adrenalectomy, and endoscopic stone retraction. Renal transplant techniques are expertly performed by senior surgeons with consistently high quality.
