Introduction

The Department of Vascular Surgery at Peking University People’s Hospital is devoted to providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment in a compassionate environment for patients with vascular diseases. The department, founded in 2003 by Prof. Zhang Xiaoming, is one of the leading vascular centers in China, with specialists in every area of vascular disease. Our specialists treat the full range of vascular conditions, create new treatments, and educate the next generation of medical leaders. The center's clinical services encompass all elements of vascular care, including diagnostic evaluations, medical management, non-invasive testing, surgical care, diagnostic angiography, vascular therapeutics (minimally invasive treatment), inpatient services, and critical care.

Clinical Services Include:

    Thoracic aorta surgery;

    Aortic arch surgery (full aorta replacement);

    Acute and chronic aortic dissections;

    Thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms;

    Marfan syndrome and coarctation of the aorta;

    Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA);

    Radical surgery for Budd-Chiari Syndrome;

    Carotid artery disease;

    Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)/Peripheral vascular disease (PVD);

    Subclavian stenosis;

    Mesenteric artery stenosis;

    Venous disease;

    Deep vein thrombosis (DVT);

    Leg swelling;

    Varicose veins;

    Spider veins;

    Vascular medicine;

    Nephrology;

    Renal artery/vein aneurysm/dissection/stenosis;

Minimally Invasive Treatment Strategies

In addition to open surgery, specialists offer several innovative strategies for the minimally invasive management of vascular diseases, including:

    Minimally invasive stent-grafts for selected descending thoracic aortic/abdominal aneurysms;

    Stent-grafting for selected type B aortic dissections;

    Repair of extensive thoracoabdominal aneurysms;

    Multi-modality imaging of various complex thoracic aortic conditions;

    Ascending aneurysm repair with an interposition tube graft;

    Composite aortic root replacement;

    Stent graft/minimally invasive endovascular surgery.

Surgical repair of thoracic/abdominal aortic aneurysms is usually carried out when the aneurysm is large enough to pose a significant risk of rupture/dissection/when complicated aneurysms cause symptoms. Aneurysms of smaller size are usually managed medically with blood pressure control and periodic follow-up imaging.

The Quality of Our Patient Care is also enhanced by:

1) Follow patient outcomes: The Department of Vascular Surgery at Peking University People’s Hospital has taken the unprecedented step of independently evaluating the outcomes of patients who had undergone procedures for aortic disease and PVD. These tracking systems ensure we deliver quality care and inform the public about our success rates with unprecedented accuracy and objectivity.

2) A dedicated nurse coordinator: Our team includes a dedicated nurse coordinator who gathers relevant information about each patient’s condition and symptoms to arrange a prompt evaluation with the most appropriate vascular expert.

Nationally Recognized Research and Care

The Department of Vascular Surgery physicians participate in nationally recognized research and clinical trials that involve:

1) Evaluate Treatments

Our physicians are principal investigators in national trials, including one that has played a vital role in China's Food and Drug Administration’s approval of drug-eluting balloons and BTK stents. Currently, we are leading trials that evaluate the non-surgical treatment of thoracic aortic diseases with endografts. Director Zhang Xiaoming is the former Chairman of the Vascular Surgeon Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and Vice Chairman of the Professional Committee of Vascular Disease of the China Society of Microcirculation.

2) Investigate New Devices

Since 1994, when Prof. Zhang Xiaoming invented China’s first stent for venous disease, our institution has played a leading role in the design, development, and evaluation of novel vascular devices through clinical trials." Our clinicians also investigate new devices such as endovascular stent grafts, drug-coated stents, drug-coated balloons, and other minimally invasive technologies.
