Critical Care Medicine
Department of Critical Care Medicine
Overview
The Department of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) at Peking University People’s Hospital is the first integrated CCM department in China.
Established in 2009, the department is composed of three main units: Surgical, Medical, and Cardiovascular. These units function as sub-ICUs, such as Emergency ICU (EICU)/Respiratory ICU (RICU)/Transplant ICU (TICU)/Neurological ICU (NICU). The department provides care to critically ill adult patients from both within and outside the hospital.
In 2010, we were certified as one of the first batches of “The National Clinical Center for CCM (tentative).” We also serve as the lead department of the Center for CCM of Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC), which consists of 22 affiliated teaching hospitals in Beijing and other provinces.
As one of the national leaders in critical care, we receive more than 2,600 patients annually from across China and host over 100 fellows and visitors (including both doctors and nurses) each year.
Director: Prof. An Youzhong
History
In the early 1980s, former hospital presidents Prof. Huang Cuiting and Prof. Du Ruyu initiated the establishment of an intensive care unit. The hospital’s first ICU, the Surgical ICU (SICU), was founded in 1989, followed by Cardiac Surgical ICU (CSICU), Respiratory ICU (RICU), Emergency ICU (EICU), and Liver Transplant ICU (TICU) between 1994 and 2004.
In early 2009, the hospital brought all of these units together to establish the current Department of Critical Care Medicine. While maintaining its specialized functions, the department restructured its staffing to form a unified and cohesive specialty team.
Prof. An Youzhong has served as the department’s first director since 2009. He is currently Vice President of the CCM Sub-society of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and a standing member of the CCM Sub-society of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA). He also holds deputy-director positions in the Sub-societies of Enteral and Parenteral Nutritional Therapy/CCM of the Beijing Medical Association (BMA). As the founder, he chairs the Center for CCM at PUHSC.
Faculty
The department currently has 24 doctors, including 4 professors, 3 associate professors, and 7 attending physicians. Under the leadership of Prof. An Youzhong, many of our doctors are nationally recognized experts and serve in key roles in various academic societies.
We have 102 nurses, including 1 supervisor nurse practitioner and 7 nurse practitioners. Our nursing team is led by Ms. Wu Xiaoying, the chief head nurse, who is a member of the Critical Care Branch of the Beijing Nursing Association.
During major public health emergencies such as the SARS outbreak in 2003, the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, and the Yushu Earthquake in 2010, our medical and nursing staff demonstrated exceptional dedication and professionalism in saving lives. Despite the challenges of working in critical care, our staff remain proud to serve as intensivists/critical care nurses.
Facilities
As a fully integrated CCM department, we currently have 41 intensive care beds equipped with multi-parameter monitors/advanced ventilators/infusion-pumping systems/bedside Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)/fiberoptic bronchoscopes/ECG/hemodynamic monitoring tools (PA catheters/PiCCO system/ultrasound)/defibrillators/bispectral index (BIS)/ECMO systems.
More importantly, all these technologies are skillfully operated by our highly trained staff. With these advanced tools, we are better able to diagnose and treat critically ill patients.
1. A Nationally Leading ICU Center
Every year, our department treats over 2,600 critically ill patients, with a mortality rate of less than 5% and an average APACHE II score of 17.
Over the past two decades, we have gained rich experience in managing patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, especially in cases involving severe sepsis/multiple trauma/severe malnutrition/organ transplantation/severe acute pancreatitis (SAP)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)/COPD/disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)/acute coronary syndrome (ACS)/acute renal failure (ARF).
We are proficient in gastrointestinal function monitoring/enteral and parenteral nutrition support/sedation and analgesia for critically ill patients.
2. Education and Academic Activities
Our department is responsible for training undergraduate/graduate medical students, rotating residents, and many visiting trainee doctors. We provide education through case discussions/clinical rounds/specialized lectures.
Our goal is to teach young doctors how to treat critically ill patients not only as clinical cases but as human beings. In addition to mastering protocols and procedures, students are encouraged to develop a humanistic approach to patient care.
As the founding department of the Center for CCM at PUHSC, we have organized the Peking University Critical Care Medicine Forum (PUCCMF) for eight consecutive years. This forum has become one of the most influential academic conferences in the field of CCM and plays an important role in advancing critical care medicine in China.
