Overview

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Peking University People's Hospital is one of the pioneering emergency medicine specialties established in China. After more than four decades of development, it has become a comprehensive emergency medicine center that integrates clinical care, education, and research. It is recognized as a National Key Clinical Specialty by the National Health Commission, the authorized site for the Doctoral Program in Emergency Medicine of Peking University, and Beijing Standardized Residency Training Base. Additionally, it serves as the Clinical Teaching Base for Emergency Nurses of the Chinese Nursing Association and the Beijing Nursing Association. The department has consistently been at the forefront of providing medical services and assistance for areas with limited medical resources like Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Xizang Autonomous Region, as well as delivering prompt medical care for natural disaster relief. To date, it has dispatched numerous medical teams to participate in rescue and security operations at various levels.

Our Team:

The department comprises 45 physicians, of whom 19 hold senior professional titles and 91% have obtained a master's degree and higher. Additionally, the department includes 156 nurses. Many doctors hold prominent positions such as chair, standing committee member, and committee member in prestigious academic organizations, including the Chinese Medical Association, Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Beijing Medical Association, Chinese Research Hospital Association, and others.


Clinical Services

The department comprises an emergency room, an emergency clinic, a specialized animal injury clinic, an emergency observation room, an emergency intensive care unit (EICU), and an emergency operating room. It is equipped with nearly 100 beds and handles over 280,000 emergency visits annually. The department serves as a regional center for critical care and emergency diagnosis and treatment, equipped with advanced medical devices, including emergency ultrasound, blood purification machines, hemodynamic monitoring devices, mild hypothermia therapy apparatus, mechanical ventilators, and others. The green pathway for acute myocardial infarction and upper gastrointestinal bleeding has been established. We have also established specialized medical teams for heart failure, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), hemofiltration, pressure ulcer care, and intravenous therapy.

Featured Medical Services:

   Hemodynamic monitoring and organ support in the management of sepsis;

   Diagnosis and management of heart failure;

   Diagnosis and management of severe disorders affecting the blood and immune system, including thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, hemophagocytic syndrome, hemophilia, hemolytic anemia, severe systemic lupus erythematosus, adult-onset Still's Syndrome, autoimmune encephalitis, among others;

   Diagnosis and management of other rare diseases, including IgG4-related disease, Marfan syndrome, Castleman's disease, and POEMS syndrome, among others.


Education

The department has consistently taken responsibility for the undergraduate and postgraduate students' education and training, standardized residency training, and fellowship training. We regularly organize a variety of courses and training sessions for different groups and provide advanced training for visiting scholars/physicians from across the country to enhance their professional competencies. Our Emergency Case Seminar has successfully run for 14 years, comprising 70 sessions. The seminar has exerted a wide-ranging influence domestically, with over 100 hospitals involved.


Research & Innovation

The department has actively participated in and presided over numerous projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, the Capital Clinical Application Research Initiative, and other research programs. The department has undertaken 11 research and development projects of Peking University People's Hospital, published over 300 papers in the past decade, achieved a cumulative SCI impact factor exceeding 60 points, took the lead in formulating two national guidelines, participated in formulating over 20 national guidelines, acquired more than 10 patents, and edited over 30 textbooks.


International Collaboration

Since 2007, the department has dispatched over 10 physicians to renowned institutions in France and the United States (Mayo Clinic, the University of Toledo Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic, New York Hospital Queens and Saint Louis University Hospital) for both long-term and short-term academic exchanges. Since 2009, we have maintained long-term exchanges and collaborations with the University of Toledo Medical Center, conducting in-depth clinical and scientific research.


Honors & Awards

The department has been successively recognized with numerous honors, including the National Health System Youth Civilization Unit, Outstanding Communist Youth League Branch in the "Pioneer Cup" of Universities and Vocational Colleges in Beijing, National March 8th Red Collective for their contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pioneer Communist Youth League Branch of Peking University Health Science Center, Advanced Collective in Beijing's efforts against the COVID-19 epidemic. A large number of outstanding individuals have also emerged, including recipients of titles such as National Outstanding Communist Party Member, Outstanding Communist Party Member of Beijing, and Model Communist Party Member of Peking University.
