The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Peking University People’s Hospital was established in 1986. Professor Ji Linong, a leading physician and scientist in the field of diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism in China, currently chairs the department. Professor Ji Linong is also the Chair of the IDF West-Pacific Region and the President of the Chinese Geriatric Endocrine Society.
The department consists of an outpatient clinic, inpatient wards, and a laboratory equipped with modern equipment. It is committed to teaching and training medical professionals at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The department has 12 professors and associate professors, 6 attending physicians, 6 clinical fellows, 15 nurses, and 4 laboratory technologists.
The department is a leading institute in diabetes care and research in China. It is the National Key Specialized Center for Endocrinology and the Beijing Clinical Medical Research Center of Diabetes, both accredited by the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, respectively. It is also one of the diabetes educator training centers designated by Project Hope, a worldwide diabetes education program.
Over the past three decades, the department has been fully dedicated to providing the best clinical care for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic disorders. Currently, the daily number of patient visits at the outpatient clinic exceeds 500, and the monthly number of discharged patients from inpatient wards is around 110. The department’s research activities primarily focus on understanding the etiology of diseases, identifying unmet medical needs in disease management, and developing new treatment methods. The department is undertaking numerous research projects, including those supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Basic Research Program of China, the National High-tech Research and Development Program of China, and the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. Additionally, the department leads many clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of new anti-diabetes drugs. Professor Ji Linong is the principal investigator of several international multi-center clinical studies. Over the past five years, the department has published more than 200 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, such as Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Diabetes Obesity & Metabolism.
In addition to regular endocrinology services, the department also provides more individualized clinical services, including specialized programs for newly diagnosed diabetes, adolescent diabetes, gestational diabetes, monogenic diabetes, insulin pump therapies, type 1 diabetes, continuous glucose monitoring, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, pituitary disease, adrenal gland disorders, and medical nutrition.
