The Department of Neurosurgery at Peking University People's Hospital is a professional center for microneurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, and endoscopic neurosurgery, characterized by precise and minimally invasive techniques and patient-centered philosophy in both emergency and inpatient procedures.


The center is at the domestic leading level in microvascular decompression techniques (such as for facial spasm, trigeminal neuralgia, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia). It has unique techniques in the treatment of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Meige’s syndrome, dystonia, and other functional disorders. The center has also achieved important results in the treatment of head trauma, cerebral aneurysm, cerebrovascular malformations, ischemic cerebrovascular disease, Moyamoya disease, glioma, meningioma, brain metastases, acoustic neuroma, skull base tumors, craniofacial tumors, pituitary adenoma, hydrocephalus, spinal cord tumors, Chiari malformation, tethered cord syndrome, and cerebral palsy.


The center was founded in 1984 by Professor Luan Wenzhong. With years of unremitting efforts, it has become a prominent clinical department of PKUPH. The center has more than 40 staff members, including 13 doctors(5 chief physicians, 2 deputy chief physicians, 2 attending physicians and 4 residents) 3 professors, and 3 doctoral supervisors.


The center has participated in and completed a National Key Research and Development Program of China, a National Science and Technology Support Program (during the 12th  Five-Year Plan), and 18 national and provincial projects, obtained 3 national patents and 1 invention patent and published more than 260 academic articles.


The center has trained more than 40 graduate students and more than 200 medical trainees. It is located on the 8th floor, Area C, of the inpatient building at Peking University People's Hospital. The center is equipped with a variety of advanced professional medical devices, complete facilities, and strong capabilities to address a wide range of neurosurgical diseases.


The center focuses on: optimizing and integrating academic resources and functions, strengthening the implementation of medical safety standards and norms, emphasizing the leading role of medical innovation, reinforcing international and domestic academic exchanges and cooperation, highlighting a patient-centered service philosophy, advancing sophisticated professional skills and management, promoting the spirit of craftsmanship, and aiming to build a leading functional neurosurgery team to serve patients at the highest level.


SCOPE OF CLINICAL SERVICES

We provide with state‐of‐the‐art diagnosis and treatment include but are not limited to:

1) FUNCTIONAL NEUROSURGERY

Hemifacial spasm, Meige’s syndrome, trigeminal/glossopharyngeal neuralgia, seizures and epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and cerebral palsy.

2) TUMOR NEUROSURGERY

Benign intracranial tumors, malignant intracranial tumors, metastatic brain tumors, skull base tumors, cranio-cervical tumors, and craniofacial tumors.

3) VASCULAR NEUROSURGERY

Aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), cavernous malformations, and Moyamoya disease.

4) TRAUMA

Head injury and spinal cord injury.

5) SPINAL NEUROSURGERY

Spinal neoplasms, vascular malformations of the spinal cord, and tethered cord syndrome.

6) ENDOSCOPIC NEUROSURGERY

Pituitary adenoma, sexual precocity, hydrocephalus, cerebral hemorrhage, and arachnoid cysts.
