    Ophthalmology Department of Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH) was ranked as the 4th Top 15 Eye Center of China in 2014 by the National Medical Data Center. It now consists with the Eye Center and Eye Diseases and Optometry Medical Research Institute.

 

    Ophthalmology Department of PKUPH was established with the assistance of Polish physician Sunieviteh in 1937. Under the leadership of Dr. Zongxian Luo, Manxia Suo, Jun Yang, Peifen Fei, Yutong Hu, Xiaoxin Li and current director Mingwei Zhao, after 79 years of development, Ophthalmology Department of PKUPH has become one of the best eye care centers in China and it also served as a predominant training center and research center in Ophthalmology in China. It has long been reputed for rich clinical experience on retinal disease, ocular tumor and ROP in China. Ophthalmology Department of PKUPH was authorized as a key discipline of Project 211 and Project 985 in 2000. The Eye Center is doctorate-accredited by the Ministry of Education, a postdoctoral scientific research station, a training center for ophthalmologic specialists of the Ministry of Health and the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, a test center for ophthalmologic specialists of the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, a drug research center of the SFDA, and a national continuing education center.


    College of Ophthalmology & Optometry in Peking University Health Science Centre was founded on 16th, December 2016. The initiation of constructing this new college was supported by Peking University Health Science Centre and during the construction, we gained lots of help from domestic and international friends, including Wenzhou Medical University, Illinois College of Optometry, and School of Optometry from UC Berkeley.  As a new rising school focusing on ophthalmology and optometry education, we will start graduate education from September 2017, recruiting medical students who had M.D. background previously. The curriculums will cover spectacle lens, contact lens, binocular vision, low vision, visual development, strabismus, and refractive surgery, etc., and the program planned to train advanced optometrist with strong ophthalmology background. The college was based on three first-class hospitals affiliated to Peking University Health Science Centre. The president of the college is Prof. Mingwei Zhao, who initiated the construction of College of Ophthalmology & Optometry, and was also in charge of ophthalmology department of Peking University People’s Hospital. The other two vise presidents were Prof. Wei Wang and Prof. Liu Yang, who were also the dean of the ophthalmology department of Peking University Third Hospital and Peking University First Hospital, respectively. Apart from education for optometry master degree, we will include program for optometry doctor degree in the future and also focused on optometry research, product development and public welfares.


    With the set up of Peking University Health Science Center School of Optometry in 2016, under the leadership of Prof. Mingwei Zhao who served as the dean of Optometry School of Peking University and also the director of Ophthalmology Department, Ophthalmology Department of PKUPH has establish an excellent clinical specialty team covers nearly all sub specialty of Ophthalmology including optometry, lacrimal disease, corneal disease, cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastics, ocular tumor, retinal disease and neurophthalmology to provide high-quality professional eye care service to our patients.


    There are currently more than 70 staff in the Eye center, including 4 doctoral supervisors, 1 former president of the Chinese Ophthalmology Society (2007-2010), 1 chief editor of the Chinese Ocular Fundus Diseases Journal, 1 former president and 1 vice-president of the Chinese Ocular Fundus Diseases Society, 1 vice-president of the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and Amblyopia Group of the Chinese Medical Association, and 6 committee members of the Chinese Ophthalmology Society. Nine experts served as the editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Medicine. Currently, the Eye Center has 64 open ward beds. In the recent 3 years, the annual in-patients average was 3585, the annual out-patient average was 138765, in which 55% of the patients were from other provinces, and the amount of out-patients and operations has been increasing for the past 45 years.


    The Eye Diseases and Optometry Medical Research Institute of PKUPH was established in 2009. The Eye Diseases and Optometry Medical Research Institute aims at providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of visual impairment, exploring the mechanism of vision loss and restoration, finding new ways for clinical therapies, and carrying on clinical translational researcheffectively reduce the incidence of visual impairment in our nation. It focuses on pathological mechanisms and intervention strategies of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the pathogenesis of retinal detachment with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), DR and ROP.


   The equipment of our nstitute includes a DNA sequencing system, a research surgical microscope, a flow cytometer, electrophysiology equipment, a lyophilizer, and an optical microscopic imaging system. These systems support the original vital research platforms including the confocal scanning laser microscope, the immunohistochemical automatic analyzer, the PCR Amplifier, the dissecting microscope, and the freezing microtome. At the same time, the management and construction of the animal operating room is also invested to provide strong support for developing proteomics and genomics research.


    Till now, 61 research projects have been undertaken in our Eye diseases and optometry medical Research Institute, including two “973” grants, 2 “863” grants, 5 national “eleventh-five-year” and “twelfth-five-year” supportive funding, 3 “985” projects, 17 National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, 2 international collaboration study, 1 WHO funded grant and other provincial grants. Total research funding is more than 44 million RMB. Based on the research, more than 459 articles have been published in Chinese, 200 have been published as SCI papers, and 12 patents have been authorized by the National Patent Office. Four provincial and public organizational prizes have been awarded, 3 firstsecond prizes of advances in science and technology of institution of higher education of the Ministry of Education have been authorized, and 1 “Song Ching-ling Prize in Pediatrics” of the 4th Song Qing-ling Foundation(SQLF)has been received.
