Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery is committed to developing specialized medical care programs through continuous innovation, guided by patient-centered care, optimal medical quality, and precise therapeutic principles. Whether you are a patienta medical employee, please believe that we possess far more than advanced techniques to help you regain a beautiful life through our healing hands.
There are 36 sickbeds in the department with more than 2,000 admitted patients and over 1,600 operations annually, and about 400 daily outpatients. Presently, it has a working staff of 40, including 19 doctors, 12 professors and associate professors, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 3 master's supervisors, and is equipped with all kinds of domestically advanced otorhinolaryngology diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
The department has three medical groups: the Otology Group, the Rhinology Group, and the Laryngopharynx / Head and Neck Surgery Group. We are the leading unit of the Peking University Speech and Hearing Research Center. Our department has performed over 2,000 cochlear implant cases since 2000, and we successfully conducted the first bilateral cochlear implant case in mainland China in 2002. More than 60 top-tier hospitals nationwide have received our guidance in cochlear implants. We were the first in China to use cartilage repair for tympanic membrane perforation, posterior canal wall reconstruction, and treatment for adhesive otitis media. These treatments have achieved positive curative effects and have been widely promoted. We are currently in the process of reporting the results.
We are also among the earliest in China to establish a separate ward for the Department of Internal Medicine of Otology and have long maintained a leading position in the diagnosis and treatment of deafness, tinnitus, and vertigo. We are the main sponsor and investigator of a multi-center study on the treatment of sudden deafness. The Chinese Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Sudden Deafness, authored by Professor Yu Lisheng, provide evidence-based and up-to-date recommendations for otolaryngologists nationwide. Professor Yu Lisheng has also made significant contributions to the development of guidelines for BPPV and Ménière’s disease.
In the application of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), the Rhinology Group is one of the earliest units in China, with a long history dating back to 1989. The total number of FESS cases is about ten thousand, without a single serious complication. We have conducted twenty national continuing education programs for the “Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Training Course” and have trained thousands of FESS experts in China.
The Laryngopharynx / Head and Neck Surgery Group has excelled in the diagnosis and treatment of benign throat diseases, the comprehensive treatment of sleep apnea syndrome, and reflux throat disease. This group began research on reflux throat disease relatively early in China and has accumulated extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of refractory pharyngitis, benign throat diseases, and precancerous lesions of laryngeal carcinoma.
