The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Peking University People’s Hospital was founded in 1962. The department consists of a total of 116 members, including 24 faculty physicians, 81 registered nurses, and 11 technicians. Among the faculty, there are 6 professors, 7 associate professors, 8 attending physicians, 3 residents, and 2 senior clinical consultants. The department covers 70 hospital beds for patients with respiratory diseases, including 10 beds in the Sleep Center and 17 beds in the Respiratory ICU.
Patient Care
The department provides a full range of clinical services in treating respiratory diseases and is a referral center for complicated cases involving respiratory diseases and critical conditions. There are specialized subgroups in 9 disciplines: COPD, asthma, pulmonary infection, critical care, sleep breathing disorders, lung cancer, interventional respirology, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary vascular diseases including pulmonary embolism.
The department has been in a leading position in China in the medical education and management of asthma.
For asthma consultations, we can evaluate the patient, help establish a personalized treatment plan, and provide longitudinal care. We also provide ongoing patient education programs and sponsor patient support groups.
Our COPD and smoking cessation clinics provide initial evaluation, second-opinion consultations, and follow-up care. The clinic is equipped for pulmonary rehabilitation, home oxygen therapy, smoking cessation, dietary counseling, and other therapies as deemed appropriate.
The interventional group has extensive experience in invasive procedures through bronchoscopy and is capable of performing transbronchial lung biopsy, bronchoalveolar lavage, whole lung lavage, lung volume reduction via valve implantation, cryotherapy, argon plasma coagulation, stenting, medical thoracoscopy, etc. The service will be further expanded with the impending opening of a brand-new interventional pulmonary center.
The Department operates an Intensive Care Unit equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology. In our ICU, a full spectrum of comprehensive critical monitoring and care is provided around the clock.
Research
One of the key missions of our department is research. The department has made major achievements and has played a leading role in many fields. Ongoing projects include the National Key Research and Development Project “Precision Medicine Research” in community-acquired pneumonia, the Susceptibility and Early Intervention of COPD, the Long-term Management of Asthma, the Genetic Basis for Asthma Therapy, the Epidemiology of SAS, the Regulation of Breathing During Sleep and Compliance with CPAP Therapy, the Genetic Trait of Susceptibility to Narcolepsy in Chinese, etc. The department has been honored with national awards in China, such as the Prize for Scientific and Technological Advances in Medicine and the Second Prize for Advances in Science and Technology, sponsored by the Ministry of Education.
Other grants and awards include projects for the Management Standardization Management of Common Respiratory Diseases, the Diagnosis and Treatment of Rare Diseases, and Tele-consultation with Healthcare in Rural Areas, etc.
Education Program
The department has training programs for medical residents, nurses, and visiting physicians recommended by other provinces and cities. Since 2014, the department has been one of the original 12 institutions participating in the China-Chest PCCM Fellowship programs. The department holds a leading position at Peking University and the National Steering Committees.
We offer a wide range of training courses mandated by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Nursing Association, and local medical and health societies.
We have continuously devoted ourselves to teaching and have incorporated innovative teaching methods. We pioneered the patient input model in our teaching and group discussions on asthma for medical students. Many of our faculty members have been elected as Teachers of Excellence at various levels. The department has won numerous awards for teaching achievements and is a designated site for Continuing Medical Education.
