Department of Spinal Surgery
About Us
The Department of Spinal Surgery at Peking University People’s Hospital was established on November 19, 2001. It was one of the first specialized spinal surgery departments in China at the time. For many years, we have provided high-quality medical care, ensuring that patients receive professional treatment. As an internationally first-class spine surgery center, our aim is to minimize neurological complications.
Over the last decade, we have maintained a national leading position in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal degenerative diseases (e.g., spinal degenerative scoliosis, lumbar spinal stenosis, cervical spondylosis, etc.). At the same time, we have taken the lead in certain minimally invasive surgeries, such as thoracic discectomy via video-assisted thoracoscopy and micro-endoscopic discectomy. Considering the drawbacks of fusion surgeries, we have focused on clinical research in non-fusion spinal surgeries over the past decade. The number of interspinous process dynamic stabilization device implantations and anterior cervical three-level arthroplasties performed by our department is among the highest in China. We conducted the first study to explore the relationship between lumbar diseases and lower limb joint diseases. A decade of dedicated exploration has kept our department at the forefront of spinal surgery in China, thanks to a high volume of operations, satisfactory treatment outcomes, and low complication rates.
Over the last decade, we have paid great attention to international communication and cooperation. We have carried out numerous academic exchange projects with many renowned institutions, organizations, and experts in spinal surgery from the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan. We established the first Chinese-German spinal surgery cooperation center in China, in collaboration with Hessing Klinikum in Germany.
Over the past decade, we have successfully obtained funding for many scientific research projects, including grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program, and the Beijing Major Disease Research Project. We have published more than 60 clinical articles in leading journals, such as SPINE and other top-tier Chinese journals. In addition, we have compiled and published several professional works, including Spinal Internal Fixation, The Orthopedic Therapy of China, Atlas of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, Practical Cervical Spine Surgery, and Orthopedic Clinical Difficult Cases Discussion – Spine Surgery Volume. Our academic leader, Professor Liu Haiying, serves on the editorial boards of several prominent domestic journals.
Professor Liu Haiying and the department have been featured several times by CCTV, BTV, and Health News. He was nominated for the Chinese Physician Award. Our head nurse Huang Jie received the National “Female Pace Setter” award.
On the occasion of our tenth anniversary, Professor Liu Haiying, together with other public figures and companies from across China, established the Beijing Haiying Spine Health Public Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to assist patients with spinal diseases who are in financial need and to improve the overall physical health and fitness of the population. The establishment of the foundation plays a key role in the long-term development of our department.
