Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Overview

The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Peking University People's Hospital was established in 1956. Under the guidance of two nationally renowned veteran TCM doctors, Xu Hengzhi and Zhang Jianfu, the department developed an innovative TCM therapy for leukemia and has since accumulated a wealth of experience in treating complex internal medicine conditions with traditional Chinese medicine.

The department integrates clinical practice, research, and education. Prioritizing patient well-being, we provide healthcare services through the coordinated efforts of our TCM ward, TCM clinic, acupuncture clinic, rehabilitation clinic, TCM laboratory, electrophysiology examination room, and the TCM teaching and research section.

Ward-Clinic Patient Care

Our TCM ward offers a full range of healthcare services through integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine therapies, supported by multidisciplinary collaboration across departments of medicine and surgery within the hospital. Our multidisciplinary care teams—experts in combined Chinese and Western medicine—treat acute and chronic cerebrovascular diseases, hypertension, coronary heart disease, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, diabetes, tumors, gynecological diseases, osteoarthrosis, and more. Treatments include specialized TCM therapies, herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion, health preservation, and rehabilitation, uniting specialists from across the hospital to deliver coordinated, high-quality care.

Meanwhile, patients visiting our TCM clinic benefit from access to an extensive network of physicians, nearly all of whom are faculty members at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, many of whom are leading professors in their respective fields. Our TCM clinic teams are well-known for their innovations in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease (especially stroke), arthralgia, nerve injuries following chemotherapy for blood diseases, sleep disorders, cough and asthma, digestive system diseases, skin conditions, diabetes, chronic rhinitis, cancer, dizziness and headaches, neck and shoulder pain, andrology diseases, irregular menstruation, climacteric syndrome, psychosomatic disorders, immune-mediated diseases, auriculotherapy, and weight reduction through acupuncture treatment. They have established various professional clinics and brought together specialists across the hospital to offer comprehensive medical care, which has received favorable feedback.
