Trauma Center

Overview

The Trauma Center (hereinafter referred to as the "Center") at Peking University People's Hospital (PKUPH) was established on March 15, 2017. It serves as a core department of the National Emergency Medical Rescue Base and the National Center for Trauma Medicine. As the first clinical department at PKUPH to adopt a multidisciplinary collaboration model, the Center has fully leveraged complementary strengths and shared resources of other disciplines to treat severe trauma.

The Center has actively participated in the relief of national disasters, public health emergencies, and major mass casualty incidents, as well as in the national initiative to enhance medical service capabilities in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Xizang Autonomous Region, earning high recognition from the National Health Commission and local governments.

Our Team:

Academician Jiang Baoguo of the Chinese Academy of Engineering serves as the Director of the Center and Vice President Wang Tianbing of the hospital serves as the Secretary of the CPC Party Branch of the Center. The Center currently has 20 full-time physicians, 22 nurses, 2 rehabilitation therapists, and 3 research administrators. Additionally, over 30 multidisciplinary team members from related clinical departments and auxiliary departments contribute to its operation.

A number of physicians from the Center have served as members of the national-level emergency response expert group and hold key positions in academic organizations such as the Chinese Medical Association, Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Chinese Association for Disaster & Emergency Rescue, and Chinese Pharmaceutical Association.

Clinical Services

The Center specializes in the comprehensive treatment of severe trauma patients. It provides one-stop treatment for trauma care through digital cooperation of pre-hospital emergency response teams with in-hospital emergency teams and efficient coordination between emergency teams and specialized trauma treatment teams. Through its multidisciplinary collaboration model, the center has established a one-stop service covering patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, significantly improving survival rates for severe trauma patients. It annually admits over 2,000 trauma patients, including more than 300 cases of severe trauma.

The center is the first in China to propose the four major categories of trauma damage control surgery (hemostasis, decompression, stabilization, and debridement) and the ten core trauma ICU technologies. Its team also developed 19 trauma care quality control indicators, driving the standardization and normalization of trauma treatment in China. Besides, the "Chinese Model for Severe Trauma Rescue Treatment", developed by Academician Jiang Baoguo's team, has significantly reduced the mortality rate for severe trauma in the country and kept the in-hospital mortality rate for severe trauma patients at approximately 5%, achieving excellent treatment outcomes and positive social effects.

Featured Medical Services:

     1. Chinese Model for Severe Trauma Rescue Treatment;

     2. Surgeries include emergency resuscitation, intensive care; and damage control surgery;

     3. Advanced techniques for treatment include Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA), intraosseous infusion, intra-abdominal pressure monitoring, multimodal intracranial pressure monitoring, and 3D printing technology.

Education

The Center currently has 3 doctoral supervisors and 2 master supervisors, responsible for Peking University Health Science Center's eight-year clinical medicine program, as well as master's and doctoral programs. Its regular teaching activities include specialized trauma lectures, clinical case discussions, English literature studies, and weekly rounds under the guidance of clinical supervisors.

The Center also organizes various continuing education programs in trauma medicine nationwide, including the Advanced Trauma Care Training Program of China(中国创伤救治高级培训班) and the Senior Talent Training Program of the National Center for Trauma Medicine(国家创伤医学中心高级人才培训计划). These initiatives enhance the professional skills of trauma care practitioners and expand the Center's influence.

Research & Innovation

Supported by the Trauma Treatment and Neural Regeneration Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education (Peking University), the Center's research team focuses on trauma treatment and neural regeneration, addressing seven key scientific issues in clinical, basic and translational research: the trauma care system and technology, severe trauma mechanisms, bone and joint injury research, sports and geriatric trauma studies, peripheral nerve injury and regeneration, muscle neuron disease research, and cranial nerve disorders. In addition, the team has led/participated in major national projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Health Commission, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Team Members have received multiple academic awards, including the National Science and Technology Progress Second-Class Award, the Chinese Medical Science and Technology First-Class Award, the He Liang He Li Ji Jin Prize, and others. The team members have been granted over 70 national patents, undertaken more than 80 research projects, and contributed to the establishment of over 30 industry standards, group standards, and expert consensus guidelines. Over 100 research papers in prestigious journals such as Lancet, Lancet Public Health, and Critical Care have been published.
