Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear Medicine Department
Overview
The Nuclear Medicine Department, established in 1958, is a modern department with extensive activities in patient care, education, and research. After years of effort, our department has been fully integrated with the medical and surgical care at Peking University People’s Hospital. Our expertise is available to help care for patients—from offering the earliest possible diagnosis to assisting in the assessment and management of treatment plans.
The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including a PET/CT scanner and two SPECT/CT scanners, which provide a comprehensive range of scintigraphic imaging services.
Led by Professor Wang Qian, our professional team includes 16 medical care personnel: one chief physician, two associate chief physicians, 2 attending physicians, 3 resident physicians, 6 highly trained technicians and two specialist nurses. Our team is committed to delivering optimal, high-quality care with expert consultations, treating every patient with respect and genuine compassion.
The highly specialized team performs more than 6,000 imaging examinations annually, with particular expertise in:
1. Bone scintigraphy for the diagnosis of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors;
2. PET/CT imaging for etiological diagnosis of fever of unknown origin;
3. Diagnosis of connective tissue diseases;
4. Identifying individuals at risk of degenerative brain diseases;
5. Radioimmunoassay services;
6. Outpatient radionuclide therapy for hyperthyroidism and bone pain due to metastatic tumors.

Research
Research is an integral part of Peking University People’s Hospital. Specialists in the department conduct various clinical research projects, working closely with other clinical departments. More than 30 research papers have been published in professional journals. In addition, department members annually present their work at national and international nuclear medicine conferences. Current research topics include:
1. Ictal brain SPECT imaging and interictal PET imaging in detecting seizure foci in patients with epilepsy;
2. 99mTc-MIBI bone scintigraphy and 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging in monitoring response to chemotherapy in patients with bone and soft tissue tumors;
3. 131I-MIBG cardiac uptake in the differential diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease versus other neurodegenerative parkinsonisms;
4. Etiological diagnosis of fever of unknown origin using 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging;
5. Application of 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune diseases.
Education
As part of a teaching hospital affiliated with Peking University Health Science Center, the department offers several educational programs in Imaging and Nuclear Medicine: Undergraduate Program, Postgraduate Program and Residency Program.
