Pathology
The Department of Pathology at Peking University People's Hospital is a National Key Discipline. There are 33 staff members, including 4 chief physicians and associate chief physicians, and 3 famous experts.
The department offers a full range of diagnostic services in anatomic and surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy service. In recent years, the department has examined over 50,000 cases each year. Till now, about 700,000 cases of pathologic diagnosis have been performed in our department. In addition, the department is also one of the pathologic consultation centers of Peking University, which provides pathologic consultation of intractable cases for the whole country. The pathologic diagnosis has reached the leading level and position in some areas, especially in breast tumors, gynecology and obstetrics diseases, and bone and soft tissue tumors. Our pathologists have actively taken part in the MDT of multiple departments and offer rational suggestions for clinical diagnosis and treatment. New technical methods, including special staining, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), have been set up in our department.
Pathological diagnostic features:
1. Breast tumor;
2. Obstetrics and gynecology tumor;
3. Bone and soft tissue tumor;
4. Lymphatic tissue and hematopoietic system tumor;
5. Thoracic tumor;
6. The digestive system diseases.
The department can also provide education for pathological postgraduates, including breast cancer, gynecology tumors, and bone and soft tissue tumors. More than 15 postgraduates have graduated from our department. We also offer pathologic resident training, and 12 residents from Beijing have passed the exam after 3-year training. We simultaneously provide courses in oral pathology for foreign students in gynecology and obstetrics pathology. More than 30 pathologists have come to study in our department from the whole country in the past 5 years. We participate in the complex case discussion of Beijing every month and communicate with our colleagues. We take part in many conferences every year and also organize some conferences of our own. To our knowledge, we hold academic activity every two weeks in our department.
Recently, our department undertook more than ten grants and published about 50 papers. We also wrote some masterpieces in Chinese, including Pathology of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Clinical Pathology of Breast Tumor, and Pathology of Fine Needle Aspiration Cell Pathology. Several English-language masterpieces on pathology have been rendered in Chinese, including Rosai and Ackerman's Surgical Pathology. Some professors serve as editorial board members as well as reviewers for pathology journals such as the Chinese Journal of Pathology, Chinese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chinese Journal of General Surgery, Chinese Journal of Diagnostic Pathology, and Chinese Journal of Clinical and Experimental Pathology.
