Overview

The Department of Pharmacy at Peking University People's Hospital, established alongside the hospital's founding, is a comprehensive unit integrating drug supply, dispensing, hospital preparations, intravenous medication preparation, quality management, medical services, education, research, and pharmaceutical affairs management. Over the years, the department has been guided by its core mission of ensuring rational drug use, underpinned by intelligent drug management and centered on clinical pharmacy services, thus building a comprehensive and precision-oriented pharmaceutical care system. Spanning three established campuses (Xizhimen, Baitasi and Tongzhou) of PKUPH, the department comprises various divisions, including outpatient pharmacy, emergency pharmacy, inpatient pharmacy, drug storage, hospital preparations, and clinical pharmacy.  The department is one of the first ten pharmacovigilance stations in Beijing and a member unit of the NHC Antimicrobial Clinical Application Surveillance Network for Rational Use Evaluation.

Our Team:

Director: Dr. Zhang Xiaohong. She also serves as the Deputy Director of the Clinical Pharmacy Department at Peking University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences; the Deputy Director of the Institute of Obstetric and Gynecologic Diseases at Peking University People's Hospital. She holds the following memberships: Committee Member of the Chinese Society of Perinatal Medicine at the Chinese Medical Association; Committee Member of the Medical Genetics Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; Committee Member of the Critical Care Group in the Chinese Society of Perinatal Medicine at the Chinese Medical Association.

Deputy Director: Dr. Huang Lin. She also serves as a Standing Committee Member of the Drug Economics Committee at the Chinese Research Hospital Association; a Committee Member of the Clinical Pharmacy Branch at the Beijing Medical Association; a Committee Member of the Clinical Research and Transformation Committee at the Beijing Pharmaceutical Association.

Deputy Director: Dr. Zhang Haiying. She serves as a Committee Member of the Chinese Hospital Association Pharmaceutical Specialized Committee; a Committee Member of the Drug Evaluation Committee at the Chinese Research Hospital Association; the Deputy Director of the Pharmacovigilance Committee of the Beijing Pharmacists Association; a Standing Committee Member of the Pharmacy Management Committee of the Beijing Association of Chinese Medicine.

The department currently has 148 employees, including 9 with senior professional titles, 12 with doctoral degrees, and 27 with master's degrees.


Pharmaceutical Services

The department, guided by the principles of "safety, precision, intelligence, and comprehensiveness", has established an intelligent and full-lifecycle management system for medications. The dispensing unit provides full-process, intelligent, and information-based services for drug supply assurance, medication dispensing, intravenous medication preparation, and clinical pharmacy. Through "Internet + " initiatives, it extends pharmaceutical services to include medication consultations, patient education, and AI-powered pharmacist consultations for the public. Clinical pharmacists provide specialized services across 15 disciplines, building a pharmaceutical care system via pharmaceutical consultations and multidisciplinary collaboration. They also provide specialized pharmacy clinics and joint outpatient services. The team currently conducts personalized medication monitoring for 31 therapeutic areas, earning recognition from the city and the country. Our hospital's specific preparations, such as Cough Mixture, Oral Ulcer Mucilage, Silicone Cream No. 2, Compound Chloromycin Spray, and Boric Acid Ear Drops, are highly regarded by both clinicians and patients.


Education

As the primary clinical pharmacy education unit of Peking University Health Science Center, the department has established a comprehensive multi-tiered teaching system encompassing undergraduates (including junior college), postgraduate students, clinical pharmacists, and residents. It provides theoretical instruction and primary and advanced pharmaceutical practice training for students from Peking University. Designated as the NHC Training Base for Clinical Pharmacists and Clinical Pharmacists in Demand, the department offers specialized training in Antineoplastic, Pediatric, Anti-Infective Stewardship Specialty, Nephrology, Emergency Medicine, Immune System, Endocrine and Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy. Up to now, over 100 advanced pharmaceutical professionals have been cultivated. As a Beijing Pharmacy Residency Training Base, it has maintained a 100% pass rate in standardized residency assessments for five consecutive years.


Research & Innovation

Over the past three years, the team has focused on advancing three core research domains: Individualized Medication, Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science, and Immunopharmacological Research. Over 110 papers have been published in domestic and international journals, including Lancet Oncology. Nearly 10 competitive national and provincial/ministerial-level grants have been undertaken by our team, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Beijing Natural Science Foundation. In addition, the team authored/edited/translated 4 monographs and contributed to the compilation/translation of multiple textbooks, reference books, and guideline consensuses. Our outstanding team members have received notable awards, including the Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Medical & Pharmaceutical Award, the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Leadership Award, the Science and Technology Innovation Second Prize by the Chinese Hospital Association, the China Hospital Pharmacy Award-Outstanding Team Award, and the Clinical Rational Medication Contribution Award by the China Medical Education Association.
