Department of Transfusion Medicine
About Us
The Department of Transfusion Medicine at Peking University People’s Hospital is a comprehensive unit that integrates clinical treatment and laboratory medicine. Our faculty members are not only involved in clinical decision-making for transfusion practices but also utilize cutting-edge automation and technology to provide compatibility testing for all patients requiring blood transfusion.
It became an independent department in 1989 after separating from the Laboratory Medicine Division, making it one of the earliest transfusion departments in China.
Medical Director: Wenqin Tian, MD
Clinical Services:

Expertise
1. Clinical Treatment
We specialize in ABO and RhD blood typing and assist hematologists in selecting compatible blood for patients who have undergone ABO-mismatched stem cell transplantation.
We are also proficient in performing therapeutic plasma exchange for RhD-negative pregnant women with pathogenic anti-D antibodies in their circulation.
2. Information Management
Our department uses a comprehensive transfusion information management system, which has achieved Stage Seven Accreditation from HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society), the highest level of electronic medical record adoption.
Academic Exchange
1. Domestic Exchange
As one of the largest transfusion departments in China, we regularly train technicians from across the country in general laboratory methods.
Our specialists frequently deliver lectures and share clinical experiences and research findings at national academic conferences.
2. International Exchange
We participate annually in the ISBT (International Society of Blood Transfusion) and AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) conferences to stay updated on the latest global advances in transfusion technology and therapy.
We also sent a staff member to the Blood Bank of Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, USA, for academic exchange in clinical practice, laboratory techniques, and blood management.
Education
The department offers numerous educational and training opportunities, including medical student education for Peking University Health Science Center, a residency program, and a medical science technician program covering general laboratory methods, hemotherapy decision-making, complications of blood transfusion, and therapeutic apheresis.
Research
We are interested in several topics in transfusion medicine, such as the stability of coagulation factors in thawed fresh frozen plasma and platelet transfusion refractoriness. We have obtained preliminary results in some areas and hope to publish our findings in leading transfusion journals.
Mission
Our mission is to ensure safe transfusion practices and pursue continuous improvement.
