Brief introduction of Clinical Competence Center
Peking University People’s Hospital Clinical Competence Center is operated according to the SSH standard (Society for Simulation in Healthcare) . It undertakes the teaching, assessment and research. Our mission is to improve learners’ clinical competence and improve patient safety and quality of patient care. In 2014, the center was accredited by the SSH. It became the first one who get the SSH certification in China.
The PKUPH Clinical Competence Center spans approximately 1200 square meters, dividedthree areas in the PKUPH. The Main Simulation Area, which is 600 square meters, is located in the Outpatient Building of PKUPH. It recreates a realistic hospital atmosphere such as a ward, clinic, ICU, operating room and emergency room. Each training chamber is equipped with an HD digital camera that can record and playback the learner’s operation and voice and is isolated from the corridor by the one-way glass to facilitate live viewing by the evaluator from the corridor. Surgical Skill Training Area, which is 300 square meters, is located in the Education & Research Building PKUPH. It is mainly for basic surgical skills training; The Clinical Skill Training Area, which is 300 square meters, is located in the Inpatient Building of PKUPH. It is mainly for the technical skills procedures training. We have multiple kinds of simulation, including task trainer, high fidelity simulator, SP, virtual reality and wet labs.
The center now provides more than 60 kinds of courses which can be divided3 categories. First, basic skill training courses are focused on technical skills training, like Asepsis (surgical hand washing, putting on sterile gloves) , thoracentesis, and venipuncture. Most of these courses are for medical students and nurses. Second, specialized skill training courses, like laparoscopy, and bronchoscope. These courses are for residents and specialists. Third, comprehensive courses, which are focused on critical thinking, professionalism, and non-technical skills training like teamwork, and decision-making. These courses are for medical student residents.
We provide teaching, and assessment for various kinds of trainees including medical students, residents, nurses attending physicians. There are 1500 trainees who received 44000 hours of training and/or assessment in the center in 2015.
There are 4 full-time and 2 part-time administrative persons assigned for the maintenance and management of facility/equipment assistance in organizing simulation experts to develop skill training and examination. The courses, established based on students’ demands and teachers’ suggestions, are finalized through review by the Teaching Committee. Simulation experts are front-line doctors from different clinical departments and can be employed only upon passing the training examination by the Teaching Committee after recruitment.
