Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery
Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Peking University People's Hospital was established before liberation . Through more than 90 years of efforts, the department has become one of the best well-kown hepatobiliary surgery department in China which embodies comprehensive medical center including medical care, education, training and research. This department has 68 beds（include 8 intensive care unit beds）and 50 physicians, including 8 professors of medicine, 7 associate professors of medicine, 2 attending physicians,3 resident physicians, 31 nurses including 2 head senior nurse, 6 senior nurses and 23 nurses .
As one of the earliest medical department treating portal hypertension and liver cancer in China, this department has accumulated substantial experience in the surgery of liver, bile duct, pancreas, spleen diseases, and has trained a large number of hepatobiliary surgeons for many other hospitals throughout the country. Professor Huang Cuiting took the lead in the use of splenorenal shunt surgery for portal hypertension in the 1960s in China. Professor Du Ruyu, with Professor Leng Xisheng, have established the theory of fluid substance delivery in portal hypertension, which has become a classic theory explaining the pathogenesis of portal hypertension. Led by Professor Zhu Jiye, current chief director of the department, the department began to perform liver transplantation in 2000. We have carried out more than 1000 cases liver transplantation so far, and one-year survival rate is more than 90%, ranked the first class in China. Currently, we can carry out many difficult types of liver transplantation, including liver re-transplantation, reduced-size liver transplantation, combined liver and kidney transplantation. We also did a lot of basic research in organ transplantion and liver cancer, focusing on co-stimulatory pathway, induction of immune tolerance by T cell regulation and mechanism of liver cancer recurrence and metastasis.
The staff of the Hepatobiliary Surgery participate in a comprehensive hepatobiliary medical service emphasizing HCC diagnosis and medical management, liver resection, chemoembolization, RF ablation, laparoscopic procedures, robotic surgery procedures and liver transplantation. Currenctly, we had about 500 cases of liver resection per year. In 2013, the department has been entitled as the national key discipline of surgery. In 2014, the hepatobiliary surgery laboratory has been entitled as Beijing key research lab of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer basis research. We had tight connections with top hospital such as Cleveland Clinic, University of Michigan hospital, University of Minnesota hospital and so on. Through our collaborations with our colleagues in other departments, such as hepatology, oncology, pathology and interventional radiology, we provide multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care tailored to the individual needs of our patients.
