1) The hospital now has five research institutes/research centers at the university level: Peking University Institute of Hematology, Peking University Hepatology Institute, Peking University Arthritis Institute, Peking University Applied Lithotripsy Institute and Peking University Organ Transplantation Institute.

①Peking University Institute of Hematology is one of the five biggest hematopoietic stem cell transplantation centers in the world and the biggest center in Asia, as well as, the institute is also the State key discipline of Ministry of Education and Innovative Group of Ministry of Education, National training base for talented people, National Base for Drug Clinical Research and clinical key discipline of Ministry of Health. In 1964, the institute performed the forth syngeneic bone marrow transplantation in world and also the first in Asia. And then, in 1981, the institute took the lead in carrying out HLA-matched sibling allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in China. After decades of hard work, Peking University Institute of Hematology firstly established HLA-mismatched hematopoietic stem cell transplantation system in world. In 2004, Professor HUANG Xiao-jun took over the head of the institute and led us to go forward with succeeding to the excellent tradition of several generations in the institute. Now, there are more than 500 cases of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are performed in our institute each year and more than 5000 cases have already been performed until now. In addition, Peking University Institute of Hematology is also the biggest comprehensive center for hematologic malignancy treatment and established the standard diagnostic and therapeutic system of hematologic malignancy, as well as, the institute established the best transform medicine platform. The institute undertook more than 50 national and minister/provincial programs, such as National High-technology Research Development Program (863 Program), the institute has obtained over 10 awards from Nation, Province and Ministry.

②Peking University Hepatology Institute (PUHI), the first institute for viral hepatitis in China, was established in 1978. PUHI have made historic contributions to the prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis in China by developing the first HBV vaccine and first generation of HBV and HCV diagnostic agent. PUHI have received more than eighty awards, including one 1st prize, three 2nd prizes and one 3rd Prize National Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology. PUHI, now led by professor Lai Wei, grew out of Being Medical School People’s Hospital Hepatology Institute and, through 40 years of development, have grew to become a comprehensive institute, including Research Institute, Department of Hepatology, Department of Infectious Disease, Clinical Lab and Post-Doctoral Research Center of Peking University. PUHI was awarded the Beijing Key Laboratory of Hepatitis C and Immunotherapy for Liver Disease, a Clinical Pharmacology Research centers by the Ministry of Health and SFDA of PRC, and a National Key Clinical Specialty of Infectious Disease. For the commitment in clinical laboratory ever since its establishment, the Clinical Lab of PUHI passed the Laboratory Accreditation Programme held by CAP and CNAS, and participated in the China’s national laboratory network for infectious disease. PUHI led or undertake a large number of National Key S & T Projects since the "6th Five-Year Plan" of China, and participate in up to six and seven projects during the “11th and 12th Five-Year Plan”, respectively. PUHI is committed to advancing research in areas including: Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, Hepatocellular carcinoma, Liver failure- Diagnosis and Mechanism and Fatty liver. PUHI have also established international collaborations with colleagues around the world, including University of Michigan (United States), Drexel university, and Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR, Singapore).

③Peking University Arthritis Institute founded in 1990, the Peking University Arthritis Institute is the oldest orthopedic and arthritis center in China. It is the first comprehensive arthritis center in the country. The institute is composed of four divisions including Department of Joint Reconstruction, Department of Rheumatology, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Division of Basic Research.  Since the foundation of the institute, it paid close attention to the arthritis research and obtained great achievements in this field. It is currently recognized as the leader in the clinic and research of arthritis in China.

④Peking University Applied Lithotripsy Institute: Peking University Applied Lithotripsy Institute is the former Applied Lithotripsy Institute of Beijing Medical University, which was established in 1986. The 1st president was Prof. Meng Guangdong, and the 2nd president was Prof. He Shenxu. The 1st intracorporeal electro-hydraulic shock wave lithotripter and the 1st extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter were both created here and soon popularized all over the country. The institute was granted a 1st prize of Beijing Science & Technology Progress Award, a grade-A prize of Science & Technology Achievement Award of the Ministry of Health and a 1st prize of National Science & Technology Progress Award in 1985, 1986 and 1987, respectively. For development of the discipline in an all-round way, the institute was integrated into Department of Urinary Surgery in November 2004; led by WANG Xiaofeng, a discipline leader, and Director HUANG Xiaobo, the institute is continuing to give play to the domestic leading advantages of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in treatment of urinary system calculi, actively carrying out scientific research and developing new clinical techniques related to calculi. R&D of the first combination set integrating ultrasound localization, ultrasound lithotripsy, pneumatic lithotripsy and laser lithotripsy, initiated in 2006, has been successfully completed with smooth technical transfer. It passed review and approval of ChinaFood and Drug Administration in 2010, filling the blank of China in this area. On August 14, 2009, Chinese Urological Association initiated the establishment of the "Northern Base of China for Prevention and Treatment of Urinary System Lithiasis" and set the base at Peking University People’s Hospital (PKUPH). For the huge contributions of the institute, urinary surgery of PKUPH was approved as a "Key Discipline of the Ministry of Education" and a "Key Clinical Specialty of the Ministry of Health".

⑤ Peking University Organ Transplantation Institute was established on Peking University organ transplant center in 2013. It is a famous organ transplantation research institution in China. Liver transplantation, kidney transplantation and corneal transplantation can all be carried out in the institute. It has been completed more than 1000 cases of liver transplantation, nearly 3000 cases of renal transplantation till now. Besides, it also made great progress in research of transplantation immune tolerance and stem cells differentiation. At present, it is one of the biggest organ transplantation research institutions with high academic level in China.
