Peking University People's Hospital was founded in 1918, with a glorious and long history. Several directors are prestigious and widely influential experts, among whom Professor Huakang Zhou is one of the pioneers of the pediatrics in China and Professor Chengwen Yuan has been served as associate editor-in-chief of "Chinese Journal of Pediatrics". Through the joint efforts of several generations of all the staff, pediatric department developed to be a part of the national key disciplines in 2001. General pediatrics as well as the emergency outpatient care are open full-time. Besides, three main subspecialties has been established. Children and adolescents with diseases or various health problems can be treated timely.
Since the early 1970s, the Pediatrics Department has devoted to the research of diagnosis and treatment of leukemia in children, and has obtained outstanding achievements. The pediatric is the first in China to improve the MICM classification diagnosis of leukemia in children, and to develop the monitoring of minimal residual disease in children with leukemia. At present, depending on flow cytometry (FCM) and real-time quantitative PCR technology, the monitoring coverage of minimal residual disease of children with leukemia is more than 90%, and it has gradually achieved the individualized treatment based on minimal residual disease monitoring .
Since1983, the Pediatrics department has been the first in China to use large doses, multi-drug, short course system to treat children with leukemia. Now, the remission rate of acute lymphoblastic leukemia has reached 99%, with a 5-year disease free survival rate of 80% and the remission rate of non-acute lymphoblastic leukemia has reached 90%, with a 5-year disease free survival rate of 60%, and this continues to be the leader in the domestic treatment of children with leukemia. In recent years, our department has developed the new technology of removing minimal residual leukemia with immune cell therapy, and explored the use of fludarabine, clofarabine, monoclonal antibody drug in the treatment of relapsed and refractory leukemia, to strive for the time and success rate of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In spite of leukemia, we are also expert at non-neoplastic diseases of blood system, such as: nutritional anemia, blood clotting disease, aplastic anemia, myeloproliferative disorder syndrome, hemophagocytic syndrome, etc.
The neonatal ward of Peking University People's Hospital was established in the end of the 1970s, now it includes the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as well as the common neonatal ward. Neonatal ward is equipped with the most advanced medical equipment in China, and reasonably allocated medical staff, all doctors have Master’s degree or above, and have strong technical force. Since the establishment, the neonatal ward has developed various modes of mechanical ventilation, application of pulmonary surfactant, parenteral nutrition, peripherally inserted central catheter(PICC), umbilical vein intubation (UVC), exchange transfusion and emergency gastroscopy and other advanced technologies, and can also conduct the monitoring of bedside ECG, respiration, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and the non-invasive inspection of the bedside X-ray, ultrasound echocardiography, TCD, EEG, etc. and trace blood-gas analysis, the blood glucose, transcutaneous bilirubin monitoring. We are in China’s leading position in rescuing preterm infants and critically sick neonates. In addition, we also conduct regular follow-up for discharged premature and critically sick newborn, monitoring the growth and development of children and giving guidance for feeding and rehabilitation, to improve the living quality of children.
Founded in 2014, the Neurology Unit mainly treats the children with various neurological and mental disorders, particularly refractory epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disorders, hereditary neurodegenerative diseases, genetic metabolic diseases, ADHD and other developmental & behavioral disorders. Characteristic clinical, training and research platform of pediatric epileptology has been established, with various treatment for refractory epilepsies, like antiepileptic drugs, ketogenic diet, vagal nerve stimulation. Founded in 2015, People’s Bureau for Epilepsy, a patient caring NGO, organized successfully health education courses monthly on epilepsy to improve the awareness of the disease. As the chair unit, we have organized series of Beijing Forum of developmental & behavioral Pediatrics. The academic leader, Professor Jiong Qin, currently serves as Chair of China Child Neurology Society, Vice President & secretary general of China Association Against Epilepsy (CAAE), and council member of Asian Oceanian Child Neurology Association.
