Peking University People’s Hospital Breast Center (PKUPHBC)
PKUPHBC was established with the mission of breast disease prevention and treatment for Chinese residents in August, 1992. It is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary breast care program, offering a full spectrum of clinical and support services, from consultation, screening and diagnosis to treatment, research and thorough education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, and the public. PKUPHBC is the premier comprehensive breast center in Chinese medical universities.
As part of the renowned Peking University People’s Hospital, the Breast Center stands at the forefront of breast cancer treatment in China. The Center's state-of-the-art technologist and highly skilled medical professionals are nationally recognized. It has a staff of 16 breast disease experts, including six professors and four associate professors. PKUPHBC serves more than 50,000 outpatients and 3300 inpatients every year with 52 hospital beds. Of those, about 800 breast cancer patients come here, seeking the innovative, integrated, high quality and cost-effective care that has made PKUPHBC widely known. Especially, the diagnostic rate of early breast cancer here is far higher than the average of other hospitals in Beijing. Meanwhile, PKUPHBC provide services surgical and systemic treatment (chemotherapy, endocrine therapy and molecular targeted therapy) as well as breast reconstruction.
（1）Leading screening techniques, including mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI and stereotactic breast biopsy.

（3）Timely diagnosis and treatment, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy.
（4）Consultation for cosmetic surgery to post-treatment rehabilitation and support groups.
PKUPHBC was equipped with modern breast diagnosis facilities, such as full field digital mammography, color Doppler ultrasound machine, fibroptic ductoscopy and minimally invasive biopsy system. All the breast imaging diagnosis and interventional diagnosis procedures are done by our own team members, greatly improving diagnostic accuracy. In 2012, Mammotome Biopsy System was operated at the breast center. Breast biopsy can be performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia within half an hour. Physician can gently collect tissue samples through one small 1/4 inch incision by ultrasound. A lump may be reduced completely in size at the same time it is biopsied without the need for open resection. The breast center firstly performed stereotactic localization in China. When the area containing minor calcification cannot be felt by exam or seen by ultrasound, physicians will use digital mammography technology to identify the abnormality in the breast with two different angles. They can then pinpoint the exact location of the lesion, precisely place the biopsy needle into the area, and then retrieve a tissue sample from the breast.
PKUPHBC pioneered the concept of “breast-sparing” surgery more than 20 years ago. The rate of breast conserving surgery is approximately 45% now. In 2011, PKUPHBC firstly used indocyanine green fluorescence imaging to detect sentinel lymph nodes in China. Currently, the rate of sentinel lymph node biopsy accounts for 70% at the breast center, 80% of that is pathological negative. The patients of early breast cancer will avoid from unmerciful mastectomy or axillary lymph node dissection and obtain great benefit of life quality. For women who have to receive mastectomy, breast reconstruction offers a renewed sense of completeness. Since 1987, the breast center had performed instant or delayed breast reconstruction after mastectomy by prosthetic material (implants) or autologous tissue (the latissimus dorsi muscle flap, the TRAM flap), which could reduce patients’ sense of inferiority, insecurity and social anxiety .
PKUPHBC offers comprehensive training of general surgery for different population such as residents undergraduate students and interns in Peking University People's Hospital. In 2011, PKUPHBC was recognized the national training base for diagnosis and treatment of early breast cancer by Wu Jieping Medical Foundation and then held large training courses annually. Now, more than 100 graduates and refresher doctors from PKUPHBC are throughout the country and most of them have been the core members in their departments.
PKUPHBC had initiated and participated numerous multi-center clinical research since 90's of 20th century in order to improve standards of diagnosis and therapy constantly, including the national 10th Five-year Research Project, the Natural Science Foundation Project of China, Beijing Science and Technology Commission Funded Project. Physicians from PKUPHBC frequently participated domestic and international academic conferences as speakers ,presidents and guests for discussion. Meanwhile, physicians individually visited world-class breast centers and research laboratories and then brought back advanced technology and neoteric research idea.
Due to the great progress in the field of early diagnosis and comprehensive therapy as well as of breast cancer in recent years, PKUPHBC was certified as the Specialty awarded as a honor of excellence by the Chinese government in 2012.
Since establishment in 1992, PKUPHBC had persisted in breast cancer screening for free in the countryside periodically, therefore, had built up a good reputation around Beijing.
